It is a healing story\, a spiritual journey\, and the path taken in search of redemption\, reconciliation\, and reconnection. It is not a war story but rather a story of war.  \n\n\n\nThrough a collection of short pieces\, the author conveys the transformation from a loss of innocence and purity of heart through the struggles endured as an Infantry Rifleman with the 101st Airborne Division during the historic Battle for Firebase Ripcord — from the disillusionment\, betrayal\, and the loss of self to what the author endured after returning home. It is about the path followed in pursuit of as full a measure of peace in life as might be possible and encourages others to pursue theirs.  \n\n\n\nMoreover\, this memoir shines a light on the noble and heroic story of what heart and strength of character it takes for men to struggle through years against themselves and the intense\, inner wound of PTSD\, and succeed. \n\n\n\nThis memoir transcends the Vietnam War\, giving voice to all those struggling to put words to their own mental narratives. It further suggests a social prescription to assist reintegration into community. We’ve memorialized it in paintings\, history books & statues where proud explorers pose heroically—their foot propped on the prow of a canoe or rocky precipice\, surveying the American west. But there’s one thing all of these artworks have in common: \n\n\n\nThey’re of white men. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Chicago Voyagers\, a nonprofit whose mission is to empower local\, underrepresented youth through outdoor adventure therapy programs\, seven Chicago-based artists will present a two-part exhibition that visualizes the future of American exploration: one where adventure knows no gender or color.  \n\n\n\nThe show includes new work that features the portrait of a youth who currently participates in the Chicago Voyagers program. A youth is using outdoor exploration as a means to become a leader and impact the world in a positive way.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition at Brushwood opening May 18\, 2025 is the first part of this two-part endeavor. There we will get a first look at studies for the larger portraits that will be unveiled at the final exhibition in Chicago at the Epiphany Center for the Arts\, opening on August 8\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:BASE: Create & Sip – Nature’s Emotion Photo Collage\n\n\n\n\nCreate & Sip is a monthly workshop hosted at Brushwood Center where participants can explore fun projects using supplies and tools from the Brushwood Art Supply Exchange\, BASE. It’s an opportunity to get creative\, try something new\, and enjoy the company of fellow art enthusiasts in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We’ll have a variety of supplies and tools available. Everyone’s project will be unique. No experience necessary\, all skill levels are welcome. \n\n\n\nThis month’s class will be led by May’s Artist of the Month\, Diana Noh\, who will teach us to make Nature’s Emotion Photo Collages. For a sneak peek of this project\, visit Brushwood’s Open Art Workshop on Saturday\, April 26 where Diana will be demonstrating from 10-4 pm. You can also see Diana’s work displayed in the Brushwood Center Gallery from April 26 – May 30. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll have a variety of supplies and tools available. Everyone’s project will be unique. No experience necessary\, all skill levels are welcome. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist: \n\n\n\nDiana Noh is an interdisciplinary artist working with photography\, fiber\, and installation. Her practice celebrates reconstructions of distressed photographs of architectural spaces and landscapes\, exploring themes of trauma embedded in her family relationships and cultural in-betweenness.  \n\n\n\nDiana has exhibited pieces in Asia\, North America\, and Europe\, at venues including Space HNH in Seoul\, South Korea; Griffin Museum in Winchester\, MA; Woman Made Gallery in Chicago\, IL; The Arts Council in Fayetteville\, NC; Eastern Market in Detroit\, MI; Editart in Geneva\, Switzerland; The Art Center Highland Park in Highland Park\, IL; Hudson Valley MOCA in Peekskill\, NY; Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills\, MI. Her work is collected in the collections of Jennifer and Dan Gilbert\, Kyungil University\, and numerous Private Collections. \n\n\n\nDiana currently resides in Chicago\, IL. DESCRIPTION:Cook County Birding Big Year: A Story of Passion\, Disappearing Birds\, and How We Save What’s Left\n\n\n\nCelebrate spring migration at Brushwood with an educational and inspiring program and bird walk with Tarik Shahzad. \n\n\n\nThe guided bird walk begins at 1:00 pm at Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods. \n\n\n\nAt 2:00 pm\, Tarik will present the story of his Cook County Birding “Big Year:” a personal challenge to identify as many unique species of birds as possible within a calendar year. Tarik\, 27\, set the new Cook County birding record by logging 294 unique bird species in 2024! \n\n\n\nWith a retelling of his adventure\, Tarik will impart his learnings about Cook County’s diverse natural spaces\, the growing birding community\, the steep decline of birds in our region\, and how the environmental community can work to better protect our avian friends for generations to come. As a member of The Nature Conservancy in Illinois’ government relations team\, he will weave in potential policy and advocacy solutions to our worsening biodiversity crisis. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\nAbout Tarik Shahzad\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Chicago\, Tarik Shahzad spent his childhood falling in love with nature at local parks and forest preserves. He continued his passion for nature at Middlebury College\, graduating in 2020 with a degree in Environmental Policy.  \n\n\n\nAfter graduating college\, Tarik honed skills in political organizing\, communications\, and ecological restoration. As an ecological restoration intern with Audubon Great Lakes\, Tarik helped restore prairie and marsh habitat in Chicago’s southeast side for people and wildlife.  \n\n\n\nIn March 2023\, Tarik joined The Nature Conservancy’s Illinois chapter as an environmental policy advocate. His role focuses conservation and climate policy analysis\, lobbying\, and education to external audiences. His professional interests include coalition-building and centering environmental justice concerns in the policy-making process. \n\n\n\n In his free-time\, Tarik enjoys birding\, volunteering at park and forest preserve stewardship days\, trying new foods throughout the Chicagoland area\, and leading nature tours across the region.

Her practice celebrates reconstructions of distressed photographs of architectural spaces and landscapes\, exploring themes of trauma embedded in her family relationships and cultural in-betweenness. Stop by to learn from Diana! \n\n\n\nWHEN DOES IT HAPPEN? 10am-3pm\, the last Saturday of every month (no meetings in November and December 2025). DESCRIPTION:At Ease Book Club – Where the Light Enters: A Soldier’s Journey  \n\n\n\nAnnouncing a book club for Veterans and members of the military community with local author and Veteran Leland Austin Gagnebin\, focused on his book  Where the Light Enters: A Soldier’s Journey. \n\n\n\nFrom an idyllic childhood to the brutal realities of war\, join Leland as he guides you through the struggles in the jungles of the A Shau Valley and rugged Annamite Mountains during the Vietnam War—and experience how\, decades later\, he journeyed back to this source of troubling dreams and PTSD in search of peace and closure. And found it. \n\n\n\nAs Veterans and military community members\, we will explore Veteran stories and how these experiences impact the author\, ourselves\, and our community. Leland and Brushwood Center hope that his story can be a source of healing and story sharing for the military community. \n\n\n\nThis virtual book club will meet weekly on Zoom on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm from April 22 – May 27. Virtual Class.  \n\n\n\n\nREGIster\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n Where The Light Enters is a memoir about the impact the Vietnam War had on one soldier’s life. It is a healing story\, a spiritual journey\, and the path taken in search of redemption\, reconciliation\, and reconnection. It is not a war story but rather a story of war.  \n\n\n\nThrough a collection of short pieces\, the author conveys the transformation from a loss of innocence and purity of heart through the struggles endured as an Infantry Rifleman with the 101st Airborne Division during the historic Battle for Firebase Ripcord — from the disillusionment\, betrayal\, and the loss of self to what the author endured after returning home. It is about the path followed in pursuit of as full a measure of peace in life as might be possible and encourages others to pursue theirs.  \n\n\n\nMoreover\, this memoir shines a light on the noble and heroic story of what heart and strength of character it takes for men to struggle through years against themselves and the intense\, inner wound of PTSD\, and succeed. \n\n\n\nThis memoir transcends the Vietnam War\, giving voice to all those struggling to put words to their own mental narratives. It further suggests a social prescription to assist reintegration into community. This finely crafted work has many layers — emotional\, physical\, behavioral\, ethical\, political\, spiritual\, the importance of family\, and the bonds with fellow soldiers — all woven artfully into the tapestry of the author’s life story.  \n\n\n\nConveyed in a raw\, straightforward presentation without being crass or superfluously graphic\, its descriptions are vibrant and visual\, drawing emotion from the reader. This memoir shines a ray of hope upon both veteran and non-veteran\, and anyone seeking redemption and forgiveness.

DESCRIPTION:BASE: Create & Sip – Natural Dyes with Invasive Species\n\n\n\n\nCreate & Sip is a monthly workshop hosted at Brushwood Center where participants can explore fun projects using supplies and tools from the Brushwood Art Supply Exchange\, BASE. It’s an opportunity to get creative\, try something new\, and enjoy the company of fellow art enthusiasts in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We’ll have a variety of supplies and tools available. Everyone’s project will be unique. No experience necessary\, all skill levels are welcome. \n\n\n\nThis month’s class will be led by April’s Artist of the Month\, Katelyn Patton\, who will teach us to make Natural Dyes with Invasive Species. For a sneak peek of this project\, visit Brushwood’s Open Art Workshop on Saturday\, March 29 where Katelyn will be demonstrating from 10-4 pm. You can also see Katelyn’s work displayed in the Brushwood Center Gallery from March 29 – April 24. \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll have a variety of supplies and tools available. Everyone’s project will be unique. No experience necessary\, all skill levels are welcome. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist: \n\n\n\nKatelyn Patton is a visual artist working in Chicago who was born and raised in the Midwest. Her practice focuses on the urban ecology and biodiversity of plants in the city and beyond\, the ways that material and color can be naturally derived from them\, and how this hyper localized knowledge can be used as a vessel for connecting multiple overlapping histories\, stories\, and meanings. She has been the Maker-In-Residence at the Harold Washington Library\, received a DCASE award in 2020\, and has had solo shows at Extra Projects\, the Lillstreet Arts Center and the NEIU Fine Arts Center Gallery. In 2024 she received her MFA in studio art from UIC. She also received an award from the UIC Sustainability Fund to establish the Art Garden\, a space for cross-disciplinary explorations with plants and alternative materials. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\n\n\n\nYour favorite beverage (alcohol is allowed for those 21 +) \n\n\n\nSome snacks to enjoy as you immerse yourself in the creative process\n\n\n\nYour friends (make sure they register!)\n\n\n\nAny extra supplies you want to incorporate into your project (Optional! Guided by Brushwood Center’s Ensemble-in-Residence\, Black Moon Trio\, this concert features live music and original artwork\, complemented by filmed narration in English and Spanish. \n\n\n\nThis premier event will also feature a dance performance by local community members and College of Lake County students.
