SUMMARY:Before Dreams Are The Last Place We Find You
DESCRIPTION:Before Dreams Are The Last Place We Find You\n\n\n\nLydia Cheshewalla is an Osage ephemeral artist from Oklahoma\, living and working in motion throughout the Great Plains ecoregion. Through the creation of site-specific land art and ephemeral installations grounded in Indigenous land stewardship practices and kinship pedagogies\, Lydia engages in multivocal conversations about place and relationship. \n\n\n\nBefore Dreams Are The Last Place We Find You will open at Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods on Sunday\, September 7th. This exhibition is an ephemeral\, site-specific installation by Cheshewalla\, and will be created during her August residency at the Center for Humans & Nature in Libertyville\, Illinois. \n\n\n\nOnce the work is created\, it will be carefully transported to Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods for installation. Because this work is time and season reliant\, what it will look like remains to be seen. \n\n\n\nCheshewalla’s practice is built on an ethos that views all beings as sacred\, with their own agency\, and with a right to complete their cycle of life and death. She works mainly with naturally shed material and seeds that are ready for collecting. At the end of installations\, each being is returned to its original place in nature where it was gathered\, closing the circle of creation. \n\n\n\nA selection of Cheshewalla’s work will be published by the digital branch of Humans & Nature Press. The Digital Press celebrates diverse sources of wisdom about what it means to be human in an interconnected world.    \n\n\n\nPlease join us at Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods on September 7 at 1:00 pm for an Opening Reception and Artist Talk. \n\n\n\nBefore Dreams Are The Last Place We’ll Find You is part of the Smith Nature Symposium. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More About the Exhibition

SUMMARY:Nature Book Club: October
DESCRIPTION:Nature Book Club: The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating\n\n\n\nThe Brushwood Nature Book Club is a space to talk about and explore nature literature in a friendly environment. Each meeting includes discussion\, creative writing\, and art activities to engage with the themes of the chosen book\, led by Brushwood’s Poet-in-Residence Kathryn Haydon\, and writer-artist Megan Donahue.  \n\n\n\nFor our October meeting\, we’ll be reading Elisabeth Tova Bailey’s The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating. \n\n\n\nElisabeth Tova Bailey tells the inspiring and intimate story of her year-long encounter with a Neohelix albolabris—a common forest snail. While an illness keeps her bedridden\, Bailey watches as the snail takes up residence on her nightstand. Intrigued by its molluscan anatomy\, cryptic defenses\, clear decision making ability\, hydraulic locomotion\, and mysterious courtship activities\, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience\, showing us how a small part of the natural world illuminates our own human existence. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:BASE: Open Art Workshop with Julia Kemerer
DESCRIPTION:You Choose the Project · Use Tools and Supplies From BASE · Get Help When You Need It\n\n\n\nOpen Art Workshop is open to anyone who wants to make something in any area of visual arts and crafts\, from the experienced artist looking for a community of others to work with\, to the complete novice who just wants to try something out in a low pressure environment\, or the family looking for a fun kids’ activity to fill their afternoon – this workshop is for you! \n\n\n\nThis month\, our upcoming November Artist of the Month\, Julia Kemerer will be our guest artist. Julia is a mixed media artist and an avid maker of all things. She paints and sculpts with paper\, found objects\, fabric\, wood\, and clay\, and has a passion for creative reuse\, or what she refers to as “using what you have to make what you need.”. Stop by to learn from Julia! \n\n\n\nWHEN DOES IT HAPPEN? 10am-3pm\, the last Saturday of every month (no meetings in November and December 2025). Come anytime during the day\, and stay as long as you’d like. \n\n\n\nWHAT DOES IT COST? Workspace\, use of our tools and any instruction or assistance you need is free; supplies from BASE are “pay what you want” (free to teachers and organizations). \n\n\n\nWHAT CAN I MAKE? Almost* anything! Come with a project you want to work on in mind\, or pick one from our list of project ideas for all ages and abilities. You are welcome to bring your own supplies and tools\, or use ones from BASE. You can work independently\, or work with an instructor. Here are just a few ideas of what you can learn and do at the Open Art Workshop: \n\n\n\nWatercolor · Embroidery · Mosaics · Book Binding · Charcoal Drawing · Knitting & Crochet · Decoupage · Sewing & Mending · Jewelry Making · Plein Air Painting · Basket Weaving · Picture Framing · Card Making · Kids Art Projects · Block Printing · Stained Glass · Acrylic Painting · Costume Making · Weaving · Collage · UpCycling · Gift Wrapping · Sculpture · Upholstery · Colored Pencil · Wreath Making · Beading · Rubber Stamps · Oil Painting · Quilting · Pastels · Macramé · Miniatures \n\n\n\n*We will do our best to accommodate all types of projects\, but there may be limitations on what is possible on a particular day due to limitations of space\, supplies or tools (supplies and tools are mostly donated\, and what is available is always changing)\, or due to a particular project being too messy or dangerous to be done in a public space. If a particular project cannot be worked on during the Workshop that day\, we will do our best to help you figure out how to proceed on a future Workshop date or on your own. Since this Workshop is open to ALL topics and media\, we won’t be experts on everything\, but we can definitely help you get started. \n\n\n\nIf you have questions about Open Art Workshop or BASE\, please contact Julia Kemerer at 224-633-2426 or jkemerer@brushwoodcenter.org. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nREGISter
