SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Healing Together: The Artwork of TIERRA
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Healing Together: The Artwork of TIERRA\n\n\n\nHealing Together: The Artwork of TIERRA features artwork created by facilitators of and participants in the TIERRA program—Transforming Internal Experiences for Resilience and Restoration through Acceptance—a research-informed\, nature-based training program that supports Community Health Workers serving communities across Lake County\, Illinois. \n\n\n\nTIERRA equips Community Health Workers with tools to address the interconnected challenges of trauma\, health disparities\, and environmental injustice. Rooted in mindfulness\, restorative practices\, and the healing presence of nature\, the program creates space for participants to explore their own experiences while strengthening their capacity to care for others. \n\n\n\nThrough visual art\, reflection\, and creative expression\, participants in this program have translated their personal and professional journeys into powerful works that speak to resilience\, healing\, and connection to the land. The pieces on display offer insight into the inner landscapes of those working at the front lines of community health. These are individuals who navigate complex social and environmental challenges while supporting the wellbeing of others. \n\n\n\nCreated during guided sessions that integrated nature observation\, contemplative practice\, and artistic exploration\, the artworks reflect themes of renewal\, rootedness\, and collective care. Plants\, seasonal cycles\, and the natural rhythms of the landscape serve as both inspiration and metaphor for growth and restoration. \n\n\n\nBy sharing these works with the public\, the exhibition honors the vital role Community Health Workers play in building healthier\, more equitable communities. \n\n\n\nSchedule \n\n\n\n1:00 pm – Exhibition Opens – Refreshments Available \n\n\n\n1:30 pm – Artist Panel \n\n\n\n3:00 pm – End of Reception \n\n\n\n\nRSVP TO THE OPENING RECEPTION

SUMMARY:Rest and Recharge: Practicing Radical Self Care in an Uncertain World
DESCRIPTION:Rest and Recharge: Practicing Radical Self Care in an Uncertain World\n\n\n\nRest and Recharge invites visitors into a spacious pause. In a world saturated with constant alerts\, urgent headlines\, and an unrelenting stream of information\, our nervous systems are rarely given time to settle. While some messages truly demand our immediate action\, many linger as ambient noise\, subtly shaping our thoughts\, elevating stress\, and eroding our capacity for presence and rest. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition acknowledges the quiet toll of that overload and offers a gentle counterbalance. Through visual art\, space\, and silence\, Rest and Recharge creates an environment that encourages slowing down\, tuning inward\, and reconnecting with rhythms that sustain us rather than deplete us. The works on view explore rest not as withdrawal or passivity\, but as an active\, necessary practice—one rooted in attention\, care\, and renewal. \n\n\n\nVisitors are invited to consider their own relationship to rest. What brings a sense of grounding or ease? What practices\, places\, or moments allow the body to soften and the mind to breathe? Set within the natural surroundings of Brushwood Center\, the exhibition becomes both a refuge and a prompt—an opportunity to step away from urgency and to remember that rest is not a luxury\, but an essential part of resilience and creativity. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:Lake Series: Photographs by Lincoln Schatz
DESCRIPTION:Lake Series: Photographs by Lincoln Schatz\n\n\n\nBeginning in September of 2015 artist Lincoln Schatz began taking lake pictures. Dedicating a month to photographing the lake each day in morning or evening. These daily trips to photograph the lake continued past that first month. \n\n\n\nOne month became two\, two became three\, and the project has continued ever since. Those first lake photos are now the foundations of the Lake Series\, a serial exploration of the landscape of Lake Michigan through photography. \n\n\n\nSince 2015\, Schatz has carefully studied this landscape. With his back to the city of Chicago\, he stands on the lake’s shore and photographs Lake Michigan with a medium-format camera\, capturing the waters as they stretch toward the horizon. \n\n\n\n\nLeaRN MORE

SUMMARY:Before Dreams Are The Last Place We Find You
DESCRIPTION:Before Dreams Are The Last Place We Find You\n\n\n\nLydia Cheshewalla is an Osage ephemeral artist from Oklahoma\, living and working in motion throughout the Great Plains ecoregion. Through the creation of site-specific land art and ephemeral installations grounded in Indigenous land stewardship practices and kinship pedagogies\, Lydia engages in multivocal conversations about place and relationship. \n\n\n\nBefore Dreams Are The Last Place We Find You will open at Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods on Sunday\, September 7th. This exhibition is an ephemeral\, site-specific installation by Cheshewalla\, and will be created during her August residency at the Center for Humans & Nature in Libertyville\, Illinois. \n\n\n\nOnce the work is created\, it will be carefully transported to Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods for installation. Because this work is time and season reliant\, what it will look like remains to be seen. \n\n\n\nCheshewalla’s practice is built on an ethos that views all beings as sacred\, with their own agency\, and with a right to complete their cycle of life and death. She works mainly with naturally shed material and seeds that are ready for collecting. At the end of installations\, each being is returned to its original place in nature where it was gathered\, closing the circle of creation. \n\n\n\nA selection of Cheshewalla’s work will be published by the digital branch of Humans & Nature Press. The Digital Press celebrates diverse sources of wisdom about what it means to be human in an interconnected world.    \n\n\n\nPlease join us at Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods on September 7 at 1:00 pm for an Opening Reception and Artist Talk. \n\n\n\nBefore Dreams Are The Last Place We’ll Find You is part of the Smith Nature Symposium. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More About the Exhibition

DESCRIPTION:Image: Walking Up the Dune by Josie Levin \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRooted in the Shadow of Coal: Botanical Treasures of the Waukegan Dunes\n\n\n\nThis summer\, Brushwood Center presents a new exhibition\, Rooted in the Shadow of Coal: Botanical Treasures of the Waukegan Dunes. It is presented in partnership with the Driehaus Museum to explore perspectives on art and nature in association with their summer exhibition featuring acclaimed botanical artist Rory McEwen\, Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature. Rooted in the Shadow of Coal embraces the tradition of botanical art while expanding to include a wider range of artists and media\, all focused on the resilient plants of the Waukegan Dunes. Each artwork in the show includes a reference to at least one\, and sometimes several\, of these botanical wonders. What has proximity to pollution done to the site? What does it mean to have this surviving and thriving natural environment next to coal ash ponds? In this exhibition\, botanical art becomes a lens to consider health\, equity\, and nature. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nLearn More About This exhibition

SUMMARY:Chicago Voyagers: The Future Voyagers Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Chicago Voyagers: The Future Voyagers Exhibit\n\n\n\nAmerica has always had a fascination with exploration and the outdoors. We’ve memorialized it in paintings\, history books & statues where proud explorers pose heroically—their foot propped on the prow of a canoe or rocky precipice\, surveying the American west. But there’s one thing all of these artworks have in common: \n\n\n\nThey’re of white men. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Chicago Voyagers\, a nonprofit whose mission is to empower local\, underrepresented youth through outdoor adventure therapy programs\, seven Chicago-based artists will present a two-part exhibition that visualizes the future of American exploration: one where adventure knows no gender or color.  \n\n\n\nThe show includes new work that features the portrait of a youth who currently participates in the Chicago Voyagers program. A youth is using outdoor exploration as a means to become a leader and impact the world in a positive way. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition at Brushwood opening May 18\, 2025 is the first part of this two-part endeavor. There we will get a first look at studies for the larger portraits that will be unveiled at the final exhibition in Chicago at the Epiphany Center for the Arts\, opening on August 8\, 2025. A portion of the proceeds from artwork sales will be donated to Chicago Voyagers. \n\n\n\nFeatured Artists: \n\n\n\nKevin West \n\n\n\nDwight White \n\n\n\nMorgan Nicolette \n\n\n\nRae Denise \n\n\n\nArrington \n\n\n\nSam Kirk \n\n\n\nEdo \n\n\n\n\nREgister for the May 18 Opening Reception
